To understand each of these methods, consider a group of four guests who wish to enter an exclusive party. The host (your method) has hired a bouncer (the .NET Framework runtime) to make sure that only guests (calling assemblies) with an invitation (a CAS permission) are allowed to enter the party (call your method). If the host calls InvitedGuests.LinkDemand(), the bouncer will check the invitation of the first guest, and then allow everyone else into the party. This is quick, but it might let people sneak into the party. If the host calls InvitedGuests.Demand(), the bouncer will check the invitation of every guest individually. This takes more time, but it ensures nobody can sneak in. To speed up the process of checking invitations, the first invited guests might use InvitedGuests.Assert() to assure the bouncer that all the guests in the group were invited assuming the bouncer trusted the first guest enough. This would also allow the first guest to bring guests who lacked invitations. This could be a good thing, if the host wanted to have a lot of people at the party but didn t want to hand out too many invitations (which might fall into the wrong hands). However, it could be a bad thing if a thief discovered that he could sneak into the party. If the host wanted to ensure people danced at the party (and never did anything else), the host would use Dancing.PermitOnly() to instruct the bouncer to make sure guests stayed on the dance floor. If the host wanted people to do anything but dance, the host would use Dancing.Deny() to prevent anyone from dancing.

RIP Authentication To prevent the corruption of RIP routes by an unauthorized RIP router or a malicious attacker, you can configure RIP router interfaces to use simple password authentication. Received RIP announcements that do not match the config ured password are discarded. Note, however, that the password is sent in plaintext. Any user with a network sniffer such as Network Monitor can capture the RIP announcements and view the password. You configure RIP authentication by selecting the Activate Authentication check box and specifying a password on the General tab of the RIP interface properties dialog box, as shown in Figure 9-30.

Peer Filtering You can configure each RIP router with a list of routers (designated by IP address) from which RIP announcements are accepted. By default, RIP announce ments from all sources are accepted. By configuring a list of RIP peers, RIP announce ments from unauthorized RIP routers are discarded. You configure RIP peer filtering on the Security tab of the global RIP Properties dialog box, as shown in Figure 9-31.

As a developer, you have many choices for implementing CAS in your applications. Choosing how to implement CAS for a particular situation can be complicated, however. Follow these guidelines to choose which CAS methods to use:

If the system databases become corrupt, SQL Server 2005 is unlikely to start correctly. You have two basic options in this situation: restore the system databases from the regular backups that you have taken of them, or use the SQL Server 2005 installation media to rebuild the databases from scratch.

Use SecurityAction.PermitOnly declarations to limit the permissions available to each method. List every permission the method requires. Use SecurityAction.Deny declarations to further refine the permissions available to each method.

Route Filters You can configure route filters on each RIP interface so that the only routes considered for addition to the routing table are those that reflect reachable network IDs within the internetwork. For example, if an organization is using subnets of the private network ID 10.0.0.0, route filtering can be used so that the RIP routers dis card all routes except those within the 10.0.0.0 network ID. You configure route filters on the Security tab of the RIP Properties dialog box, as shown in Figure 9-32.

Remember to back up your system databases as well as your user databases. Some administrators become so focused on protecting all the data in the user databases that they forget that important information is also stored within the system databases. You don t need to back up system databases as rigorously as user databases, but it is prudent to back them up on a reasonably regular basis. You should back up the master database after you create a database, change configuration values, or configure SQL logins. It is not possible to perform a differential backup on the master database.

Neighbors By default, RIP either broadcasts (RIP version 1 or RIP version 2) or mul ticasts (RIP version 2 only) announcements. To prevent RIP traffic from being received by any node except neighboring RIP routers, the server running Routing And Remote Access can unicast RIP announcements. You configure RIP neighbors on the Neighbors tab of the RIP Properties dialog box, as shown in Figure 9-33.
